Teaching Approach
So what does a session at RP Tutoring look like?
All sessions will take place at my home address in a dedicated learning suite. The suite has undergone a transformation in preparation for the launch of RP Tutoring in January 2022. The result is an environment that has been carefully designed around the children to ensure comfort and maximise learning. Spacious desks, padded chairs, laptops, maths equipment, exercise books, stationery and a movable whiteboard have all been purchased to enhance all aspects of the children’s RPT experience.
Every child will have an individually tailored plan for each session they attend. This plan is built around my knowledge of an individual’s ‘next learning steps’, as well as briefly revisiting prior learning to further embed recently acquired skills and knowledge. Regardless of the age or current attainment levels of the individual children in a session, with every child working on their own carefully designed task, the opportunities for progress are maximised for all. The aim is to make every single minute of time at RP Tutoring meaningful and enjoyable.
I believe that the RP Tutoring individual assessment system is an important part of what I offer. Each child will be working on specific national curriculum objectives based on their current level of attainment* and the subject in focus. Once I have discovered where a child’s ‘learning gaps’ are I will provide appropriate tasks and support until a concept is fully grasped. The ‘Learning Ladders’ that I have created for maths and writing enable both myself and parents (on request) to track where an individual’s strengths, recent successes and areas for improvement, lie.
*A child in Year 4 may need to work on objectives in the Year 3 or Year 5 curriculum. It is crucial that I focus on the starting point in a child’s learning journey for them to make progress. If a Year 3 child needs to focus on the Year 6 curriculum in order to be challenged sufficiently then that’s exactly what will happen!
